For many Britons, it’s the most wonderful time of year for gorging on food and washing it down with booze.
But it’s also the most popular time for searching for remedies for heartburn, NHS figures have shown.
Searches on the NHS website using the terms ‘heartburn’ and the linked problem of ‘acid reflux’ soar during the festive period with one every 13 seconds.
An analysis by NHS Digital said heartburn is the 21st most visited web page throughout the year, but it tops the list on Christmas and Boxing Day – apart from information about Covid.
An analysis by NHS Digital said heartburn is the 21st most visited web page throughout the year, but it tops the list on Christmas and Boxing Day – apart from information about Covid.
Figures for recent years show there are usually 4,990 daily page visits. But over Christmas there are 13,200 across the two days.
The page says: ‘Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat.’
The condition is linked to fatty food and drinks including alcohol and coffee.
The NHS recommends cutting down on booze and not eating close to bedtime.
