A Texas man allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend’s new lover dead after tracking her location through an app and warning her: ‘I told you what I would do if you ever cheated on me.’

Eric LaMountain, 35, shot Gavin Wood at around 3am on January 10 ‘after an altercation’, Austin Police said.

Wood, a 37-year-old father of one, was found with a bullet wound to the chest on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South Meadows Drive. He died at the scene. LaMountain fled but was arrested less than an hour later.

LaMountain’s ex-girlfriend told police that he had discovered she was cheating on him with Wood at the end of December after using a location-sharing app to find out she was at his house.

She admitted the affair and broke up with LaMountain on January 8.

Two days after the break-up she received a text from LaMountain while she was at Wood’s house, according to the affidavit.

‘I told you what I would do if you ever cheated on me and I still have his address’, he allegedly told her.

She asked if he would kill her and he replied: ‘Not you’.

He sent pictures of a gun and a screenshot from a ride-sharing app showing that he was on his way to Wood’s house.

The woman told Wood about the messages but he did not believe LaMountain posed a real threat, so he remained and insisted that she go home.

While she was on her way home, LaMountain called her to tell her he had killed Wood, the affidavit states.

LaMountain, who is charged with first-degree murder, allegedly admitted to police that he had dressed in all black before taking a ride-share to Wood’s home.

He allegedly told police that he struck Wood over the head with a gun on the front yard of his home.

LaMountain claimed Wood turned to run away and he fired shots at him.

‘LaMountain said he discharged his firearm until it was empty and the slide locked to the rear,’ records obtained by KXAN said.

Wood, who leaves behind a six-year-old son, was described by friends and family as someone who ‘had a way of making everyone feel special.’

In an online fundraising post, Wood’s friend Erica Moreno wrote: ‘He was a stand-up kind of man who could always make you laugh on your worse days and even on his worst days he would still offer you a big smile and make you feel welcome.

‘He was simply a pleasure to be around and someone you’d be proud to consider a friend.

‘Gavin was an amazing provider for his family. He worked hard to make sure his loved ones always had what they needed.’

Travis County court documents show LaMountain was charged with murder and a judge set a $1m bond.

LaMountain remains at the Travis County Jail as of Monday, records show.

His next hearing has been scheduled for February 3, 2023, at Travis County’s 460th District Court in Austin.
