Prince Harry and Meghan Markle certainly ended their bombshell Netflix documentary with a bang – filling the final three episodes with a series of attacks on the royal family.
From 38-year-old Harry’s claim that his brother, Prince William, left him ‘terrified’ during their Sandringham Summit to discuss Megxit by ‘shouting and screaming’ to Meghan’s allegation that palace insiders ‘fed her to the wolves’, there were no shortage of very harmful accusations made about the Monarchy and its most senior figures.
However, while the series drew to a very dramatic and damaging conclusion – it also left several very key questions unanswered.
Since their official exit from the royal family in March 2020, a moment described by Harry in the documentary as their ‘flight to freedom’, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have levied several damaging accusations against the Monarchy.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle certainly ended their bombshell Netflix documentary with a bang – filling the final three episodes with a series of attacks on the royal family
While the pair’s very damaging accusation that an unnamed royal made racist remarks about their son Archie’s skin tone was mentioned in passing – nothing more was said about who, what, when, or where the alleged comment occurred.
Nor did Meghan, 41, elaborate on her claim that Kate, the Princess of Wales, made her cry in the hours before her wedding – having hit back at the original version of the story, in which it was she who left Kate in tears, during the Oprah interview.
The truth about what really happened with Meghan’s choice of wedding tiara also remains a mystery, despite multiple reports about the row that is said to have erupted over the selection of the accessory, and the then-bride-to-be’s desire to try it out beforehand.
Similarly, while a number bombshell claims about their behavior within palace walls have been publicly aired over the past few years, the majority of them went ignored during the doc.
As the couple’s ‘$100 million’ documentary sends shockwaves through the palace, FEMAIL reveals the controversial questions that linger over the couple.
WHO REALLY MADE WHO CRY? MEGHAN REMAINS MUM ON TRUTH ABOUT ALLEGED ROW WITH KATE AHEAD OF ROYAL WEDDING
Meghan did not discuss an alleged argument between herself and Kate ahead of the royal wedding in 2018, during which it was initially reported she made the Princess of Wales cry
Although much was discussed during the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary, one key issue that went untouched was the question of who really made who cry during an argument between Meghan and the Princess of Wales ahead of the royal wedding in 2018.
In the wake of Harry and Meghan’s May 2018 nuptials, reports began to emerge about an altercation between the then-bride-to-be and her future sister-in-law which claimed that Kate, 40, had been reduced to tears during a row over bridesmaids dresses.
The infamous row with Prince William’s wife made headlines around the world after a supposed falling out over dresses for the flower girls was said to have left Kate in tears.
The Daily Telegraph reported that two sources said the Princess of Wales was crying after a dress fitting with her daughter, Princess Charlotte, who served as a flower girl at the ceremony.
‘Kate had only just given birth to Prince Louis and was feeling quite emotional,’ a source claimed.
However Meghan would later claim in her interview with Oprah Winfrey that it was actually Kate who made her cry.
Oprah asked Meghan: ‘Was there a situation where she [Kate] might have cried? Or she could have cried?’
However, the Duchess of Sussex insisted: ‘No, no. The reverse happened.
Meghan hit back at the claims she left Kate in tears during the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah – during which she insisted it was actually the Princess of Wales who made her cry
‘And I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding. And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized.
‘And she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.’
Meghan added that it was ‘shocking’ that the ‘reverse of that would be out in the world’.
Still, the mystery took another twist earlier this year when royal author Tom Bower claimed that the original version of events was true, alleging in his book, Revenge, that Kate ‘burst into tears’ after Meghan ‘compared Princess Charlotte unfavorably to her best friend Jessica Mulroney’s daughter’.
Bower wrote that Meghan and Kate got into a disagreement over the length of Charlotte’s hemline, the fit of her dress, and whether or not the flower girls should wear tights at the wedding.
He also claimed Meghan’s ‘insistence’ was ‘supported’ by her former BFF and mother of another bridesmaid Jessica Mulroney, adding: ‘Some would say that Meghan compared Ivy favorably against Charlotte.’
THE TRUTH ABOUT ‘TIARAGATE’: NOTHING IS SAID ABOUT CLAIMS HARRY DEMANDED QUEEN’S DRESSER ‘MAKE IT WORK FOR HIS FUTURE WIFE’
Another story to emerge from Harry and Meghan’s wedding involved a so-called argument over what tiara the bride would wear on the couple’s big day
Another controversial story that emerged in the wake of the Sussexes’ big day – but went ignored during their documentary – involved an alleged argument over the tiara that Meghan would wear during the ceremony.
An early version of events suggested that the then-bride-to-be had her ‘heart set’ on a tiara containing emeralds, however she was reportedly told that she couldn’t wear it because it the green stones may have been from Russia, according to The Sun.
Instead, the Queen is said to have selected a diamond tiara that was worn by her grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1932.
At the time of the row, the Queen is said to have told Prince Harry, according to a Royal insider who spoke to The Sun: ‘Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she’s given by me.’
‘The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage’, the source alleged, adding that: ‘Meghan can be difficult’.
However, in 2020, Meghan and Harry’s close friend Omid Scobie claimed in his book, Finding Freedom, that any upset over the tiara actually involved the Queen’s longtime dresser, Angela Kelly.
According to Scobie and his co-author Carolyn Durand, Harry felt Kelly had deliberately dragged her feet when deciding what tiara she should advise that Meghan wear.
Scobie claimed that Prince Harry had made an exasperated call to his grandmother, following an alleged tussle with Kelly, during which he is alleged to have asked whether Meghan would be given time to try on her diamond bandeau tiara during a trial with her hairdresser ahead of the big day.
He reportedly said: ‘I don’t know what the hell is going on, but this woman [Kelly] needs to make this work for my future wife.’
However a source later refuted the claims over what has come to be known as ‘tiaragate’ and told The Telegraph: ‘The Queen is probably the person he respects and values most in the world.’
As yet, neither Meghan or Harry have spoken out publicly about the incident – and given its admission from the Netflix documentary, it seems they are intent to remain mum about the controversy.
ROYAL RACISM SCANDAL: COUPLE FAILS TO NAME OR COMMENT ON SENIOR ROYAL ACCUSED OF ARCHIE SKINTONE COMMENTS
One of the most damaging allegations Harry and Meghan have made about the royal family to date was their claim that an unnamed royal made racist remarks about their son, Archie
Meghan said during her interview with Oprah that a royal voiced ‘concerns about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he was born’ – but this was not addressed in the docuseries
Arguably the most damaging allegation to come out of Harry and Meghan’s incendiary interview with Oprah in March 2021 was their claim that an unnamed senior royal made a racist comment about their son Archie’s skin tone.
During the primetime sit-down, Meghan claimed during the sit-down that member of ‘The Firm’ had ‘several’ conversations with Prince Harry about the color of their son’s skin when she was pregnant.
‘All around this same time, we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title and also concerns and conversations as how dark his skin might be when he’s born,’ she said.
‘That was relayed to me from Harry from conversations that family had with him.’
She refused to identify the person in question, saying only that it ‘would be really damaging to them’ if their name was to be revealed.
The allegation sparked a furious controversy – with many demanding to know exactly who had made the comments.
After news of Harry and Meghan’s documentary was revealed to the world, many questioned whether they would finally name the royal they claim made the remarks – however, while they made a loose reference to the topic of racism during their Oprah interview, they did not address any specifics about the allegation.
In fact, the only mention of the controversy in the docuseries came when Meghan voiced surprise that the main ‘take away’ from their chat with Oprah was the royal racism allegations, rather than her mental health struggles.
‘I thought me being very open about the depression I experienced and just how extreme that became, I thought that would be the biggest take away but it was entirely eclipsed by the conversation surrounding race,’ she said.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED DURING THE SANDRINGHAM SUMMIT? HARRY CLAIMS WILLIAM ‘SHOUTED AND SCREAMED’ – BUT FAILS TO SAY WHY
Harry (seen with the royals in March 2020) claimed during the Netflix series that his brother William ‘screamed and shouted’ at him during the Sandringham Summit to discuss Megxit
An incendiary claim made by Prince Harry during the final three episode of the Sussexes’ doc was that his brother, the Prince of Wales ‘screamed and shouted’ during a tense meeting at Sandringham where the senior royals had gathered to discuss Megxit.
The Duke of Sussex alleged his older brother, now heir to the throne, left him ‘terrified’ during the January 2020 Sandringham Summit while he ‘screamed and shouted’ at him in front of his father and grandmother as he tried to thrash out a deal to leave the UK.
Harry also accused Charles of telling untruths to his face and Her Majesty of saying nothing at the now infamous ‘Sandringham Summit’, and told of the ‘heartbreaking’ rift with his brother.
He said: ‘It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that just simply weren’t true. And my grandmother, you know, quietly sit there and take it all in’.
However, despite making the sensational allegations against his brother and father, Harry failed to reveal what actually went on during those conversations, leading to further questions about his claims.
Instead, Harry simply said that he was offered ‘five options’ during the meeting – although he went on to claim that there was actually ‘no discussion or debate’ about the final outcome.
‘I went in with the same proposal that we’d already made publicly, but once I got there I was given five options – one being all in, no change, five being all out,’ he said.
‘I chose option three in the meeting – half in, half out. Have our own jobs but also work in support of the Queen. It became very clear very quickly that goal was not up for discussion or debate.’
INSIDE THE ROYAL RIFT: MYSTERY REMAINS ABOUT WHETHER HARRY FELL OUT WITH WILLIAM OVER HIS COMMENTS ABOUT MEGHAN
Much has been made about what sparked the rift between Harry and William – but the former declined to get into detail about what really led to their fractured relationship in the doc
Harry took aim at his brother on several occasions during the second ‘volume’ of his docuseries.
As well as his claims that William ‘screamed and shouted’ during their Megxit meeting, he also accused his brother of breaking a pact when it came to their royal communications teams – suggesting that the Prince of Wales allowed his office to ‘trade’ stories with the press in order to avoid anything negative about himself or Kate being published.
‘William and I both saw what happened in our dad’s office and we made an agreement that we would never let that happen to our office,’ Harry stated.
‘I would far rather get destroyed in the press than play along with this game or this business of trading, and to see my brother’s office copy the very same thing that we promised the two of us would never ever do that was heartbreaking.’
‘The Fab Four’ (seen in September of this year at a walkabout following the Queen’s death) have been plagued by rumors of a furious fallout for years – but Meghan and Harry did not comment on what sparked it in their doc
However, he did not share any further details about what first caused the well-publicized rift between himself and his older sibling – despite multiple rumors suggesting that a wedge was first driven between the pair after William urged Harry to slow down his romance with Meghan in the early days of their relationship.
In August 2020, Finding Freedom co-author Carolyn Durand stated that the brothers first fell out in 2016, when Meghan and Harry first started dating, with the writer alleging that the rift was sparked by a conversation during which William urged his younger brother to slow the romance down and to ‘take some more time getting to know Meghan’.
The royal expert suggested that these words of advice rubbed Harry the wrong way – and served as the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as the siblings’ relationship was concerned.
‘He expressed to him, maybe he wanted to take some more time getting to know Meghan,’ Durand said. ‘It wasn’t because people didn’t trust Meghan. This was simply because the boys had watched our for each other since they were young children.’
Another report in the Sunday Times suggested that the once-inseparable brothers had been driven apart over Harry’s ‘frustration’ that he could not take on certain projects – or would have to scale back his own efforts on issues – in favor of his brother.
It may well be that Harry is planning to open up in further detail about his fractured relationship with his brother in his upcoming tell-all memoir, Spare, which is due to be released in January 2023, however as yet the truth remains shrouded in mystery and speculation.
WHAT COMES NEXT? COUPLE DECLARE ‘LOVE WINS’ BUT FAIL TO REVEAL THEIR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THEIR CAREERS
The couple spent almost all of the docuseries looking back on their relationship – but shared little detail about their plans for the future
The six-episode documentary concludes with Meghan reading out the speech that she gave at her and Harry’s wedding reception, with images and videos of the couple flashed across the screen as she read the final lines.
‘So I ask you to raise a glass to the assurance that now life begins and the everlasting knowing that, above all, love wins,’ she reads from her phone, before flashing a wide grin at Harry.
Harry is set to release his tell-all memoir, Spare, on January 10
However, other than the gushing sentiment from Meghan’s wedding toast, the couple shared little detail about what their plans for the future – having spent almost all of the documentary looking back at their relationship and the twists and turns that it has followed over the years.
Some royal experts believe that the Netflix documentary will serve as the final nail in the coffin of the Sussexes’ relationship with the royal family – with commenters insisting that there can be no way back for the couple following their latest public attacks on the Monarchy.
The fractured relationship between the couple and Harry’s family could well suffer another blow in coming weeks however, when the Duke releases his tell-all memoir, Spare, on January 10.
Harry, who was reportedly paid a $20 million advance for the book, is said to document the Duke’s ‘personal journey from trauma to healing’ – and experts have warned that the royal family should be ‘very concerned’ about what its pages might contain.
But beyond the book, it is unclear where Harry and Meghan plan to focus their professional endeavors moving forward.
At the end of last month, Meghan released the final episode in the first season of her Spotify podcast, Archetypes, but it currently remains unclear whether there will be a second series of the $18 million show.
Meghan aired the final episode of season one of her $18 million Spotify podcast Archetypes in November, but has yet to confirm whether it will return for another series
The Duchess of Sussex said she had felt ‘seen’ while recording more than a dozen hours of content about ‘the labels and tropes that try to hold women back’.
However she made no mention of whether she has plans to record more episodes in the future, casting doubt over whether the podcast will return.
It also remains unclear whether Harry and Meghan have other projects in the works with Netflix – having signed a reported $100 million deal with the streaming site back in 2020.
The couple have already recorded footage for Heart of Invictus, a documentary about the Invictus Games – Harry’s passion project for injured veterans – however the only other project that was publicly shared, an animated series about inspiring women, was scrapped earlier this year.
‘Pearl’ was created by Meghan through Archewell Productions and was still in the development stage when it was canceled by the streaming giant amid budgeting cutbacks in May.
At the time, insiders claimed that Netflix remains optimistic about the Archewell deal and has a number of projects planned, although it is not yet known what these are – other than the Invictus Games documentary.
As yet though, little is known about what plans the couple have for their professional futures – and they did not share any real indication about what they plan to do next in terms of their careers.
