A pedestrian has died in hospital after being struck by a BMW and left for dead in the gutter.
At around 12.15am on Saturday police were called to the scene of a suspected hit-and-run in Melbourne‘s south when a passenger from a ride-share vehicle noticed a man on the side of the road.
The 44-year-old was walking home along the Princess Highway between Neill and Peel streets in Berwick when it is understood that he was hit by a passing car.

Police say although the driver may not have seen him, they would have known they struck the man.
The man suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he later died.
Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the suspected hit-and-run and believe the car responsible was a black BMW sedan.
They believe the vehicle would have sustained significant damage to its front wheel arch and front left headlight.

Around the same time, a motorbike rider died at nearby Johnson Street in Abbotsford after he lost control of his bike, crashing at high speed.
The man is yet to be identified with police urging anyone who might know him to come forward.
It is understood the bike was unregistered and was not fitted with registration plates.
The two overnight deaths take the 2022 Victoria road toll to 226, compared to 202 at the same time last year.
