Angels of the North! Southerners are far less generous with their cash than people from northern regions, figures suggest
- Manchester and neighbouring Salford are the top two most giving cities in UK
- They were followed by Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow, GoFundMe data reveals
- Ireland is the most generous country in the world followed by the US and UK
Northerners already have a reputation for being more friendly and welcoming than folk down South.
Now they have been shown to be more giving with their cash too.
Areas north of Birmingham dominate a table revealing who is most generous when asked to donate to charities or appeals.
Just two cities in the south of the country are in the top ten compiled by fundraising website site GoFundMe.
Manchester (file photo) took the top spot as being the most giving city in the country, GoFundMe has revealed
Manchester took top spot on the list – retaining its title from a similar survey in 2021, while neighbouring Salford came second. They were followed by Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Norwich came sixth, Bradford seventh and Newcastle tenth. The two generous southern cities – St Albans in Hertfordshire and Brighton in East Sussex – were eighth and ninth.
GoFundMe figures also showed that Ireland remains the most generous country in the world followed by the US and UK – up one place to third from our fourth last year. Canada and Australia claimed 2022’s fourth and fifth places.
John Coventry, of GoFundMe, said: ‘The UK going up in the ranks for most generous countries was in part due to the huge response on our platform to the crisis in Ukraine, which was led by generous British donors. Despite the cost of living crisis, people are digging deep for people and causes they care about. What we’ve seen in 2022 is that, at times of crisis, kind-hearted people always want to help each other.’
GoFundMe revealed around £205million was raised for Ukraine across the website and US platform Classy in 2022, with more than 1.2 million donations.
The UK’s top three fundraisers were all Ukraine-related following Russia’s invasion in February. Britons donated more than £2.8million to the Association of Ukrainians, which topped the charts as GoFundMe UK’s largest appeal.
Another fundraiser on the list, which aimed to ‘keep Ukraine’s media going’, raised more than £960,000.
GoFundMe has seen one donation per second in 2022.
