The couple sustained multiple abrasions and scratches from having been dragged across the rocks by the wave.

According to one witness, one was unconscious for a moment before being revived by their companion and able to make their way back to safety.

With some assistance the couple were able to walk about 350 metres around the rocky shoreline to arrive at the main beach promenade area.

Life guards said the couple had been clambering on rocks near the beach, which is especially popular for scuba divers and snorkelers because of its enclosed nature and abundance of sea life.

Reports from the scene said one of the couple had been briefly rendered unconscious after being hit by the wave and dragged across rocks

A small crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene as ambulance workers treated the pair.

At the time of the incident Clovelly was experiencing a 3m swell, but the wave that struct is thought to have been much bigger.

About an hour later another photographer also made a lucky escape after venturing out on the rocks to snap images of the sell.

The man was squatting intently focusing his camera on the incoming waves while perched on the rocks near Clovelly Beach when he realised the water was starting to rise around him.

He picked up his equipment and retreated to another vantage point where he again crouched to take photos.

However, he was taken by surprise when a large wave broke precariously close to where he was perched with the force of the water almost knocking him over.

The man was able to keep on his feet and hold onto his camera and emerged seemingly unhurt but with a large embarrassed grin.
