A massive alligator is set to be euthanized after biting a man’s arm while he washed his hands in a murky pond.

The 25-year-old man was attacked at around 11am in Sanibel, Florida, with the predator biting his right arm on Thursday.

Officials from the Sanibel Fire Department said he was able to free himself and call 911, with witnesses making a tourniquet for him before medics arrived.

He was rushed to an area hospital, with serious injuries to his right forearm with his current condition unknown.

Authorities confirmed the man was from Arkansas and had been washing his hands in the pond before the attack.

At around 2pm, first responders were able to get the alligator out of the pond, with Florida’s Fish and Wildlife managing to trap the beast.

Sanibel Fires’ Division Chief Tim Barrett said: ‘He’s a big guy, he said his arm was hurting pretty good.

‘A pretty good size gator…about 8 to 10 feet gator came up and grabbed him by the arm. It was a bit of a struggle.

‘Sometimes they will use a big hook, and a large piece of meat and throw it out there and catch him.’

Gators are common in Florida and Chief Barrett said they respond to these types of calls more often than expected.

He is now warning locals and visitors to be cautious, adding: ‘Pretty much every body of water has an alligator in it, including some swimming pools.’
