David Beckham is furious after model Vogue Williams criticised him when she turned down a chance to visit Qatar in solidarity with her gay sister.

Ms Williams called the former footballer a ‘s***ebag’ over his £10 million deal to be the face of the country’s World Cup, with homosexuality illegal there.

Now Beckham’s friends are hitting back, pointing out that Ms Williams and her husband Spencer Matthews boasted about a holiday earlier this year to the Maldives, where it is also against the law to be gay. Those who are can be imprisoned for six months.

In January, the couple posted photographs of themselves on a beach on the island of Kuramathi. Alongside a picture of herself and Mr Matthews – the brother of Pippa Middleton‘s husband James Matthews – Ms Williams wrote: ‘This place is just breathtaking. I’ve always admired it from other people’s pictures. We finally made it ourselves!’

Sources close to Beckham said: ‘This is epic hypocrisy. If someone wants to take a genuine stand against David, then that’s one thing, but to call him names when she is happy to visit a country with the same laws for a sunshine holiday all feels a bit rich.

‘Vogue says she didn’t go to Qatar because her sister is gay yet she posts endless glowing pics of her amazing holidays in the Maldives.’

Mother-of-four Ms Williams also hosted an episode of BBC holiday programme Getaways where she travelled to Dubai, where it is also difficult for those within the LGBTQ+ community to live. Rules there are less restrictive than in Qatar.

During the show, she described parts of the Middle Eastern emirate as ‘an incredible experience’.

As revealed in The Mail on Sunday last week, Ms Williams told a podcast: ‘You know what? I got asked to go to Qatar. They invited me over to the World Cup and to do all this influencing stuff and [I was like] ‘I’ll take my sister, my lesbian sister. How would you feel about that?’ They invited me, and I said no there’s no way I would go over there. Not the way it is. Very disappointed.’

Today, Beckham will be watching the final between France and Argentina from the stands.

A spokeswoman for Ms Williams did not respond to a request for comment.
